Muppets / Muppet

Muppets are puppet like beings controlled by a puppeteer using one hand (at least) to open and close the Muppet’s mouth. The term Muppet comes from the grouping of the words marionette and puppet. “Muppet” is actually a word used by puppeteers to describe the open and close mouth design. But the word is generally known relating to the Jim Henson Company’s legal trademark for their family of characters and puppets.

A Muppet should not be confused with a ventriloquist dummy. Muppets are not only controlled in the face and head but also in their arms and other parts making them very different from ventriloquist dummies. Muppets are movable and show expressions. They are also usually created from softer materials. More importantly, you do not see the puppeteer who controls the Muppet as you would with a ventriloquist dummy. He or she is regularly concealed outside of the frame or behind an object.

Polyfoam is usually used to mold a Muppet and some type of artificial fur or felt gets covered over that. Most commonly, a Muppet will be designed with a pretty wide mouth and big bubble eyes. Feathers, nylon string, or yarn are all used to create hair for certain Muppets. Muppets can represent all creatures (real or imaginary) including animals, humans, artificial life, aliens, and other beings.

Some of the most well known Muppets are Kermit, Miss Piggy, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, and the list goes on. Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and Fraggle Rock are some of the most famous TV shows featuring Jim Henson’s Muppets.
